The global petfood industry is very dynamic, continually attracting new investors and players and experiencing a healthy level of merger and acquisition (M&A) activity annually. Petfood Industry’s exclusive Top Petfood Companies Database highlights all that ongoing activity as, each year, different companies rise toward the top or change their global ranking.

Table 1 shows the top 35 petfood companies globally based on 2013 data from the database; this list represents about 10% of the database entries. Changes from the previous year's list have come about mainly from market forces such as M&A activity. Case in point: Vitakraft no longer appears on the list because of its 2013 acquisition by Deuerer, which has risen to number eight globally thanks to that acquisition as well as that of Pets Choice.

Most petfood companies have enjoyed revenue growth from previous years, but not all. In some cases, this is because of actual revenue declines due to struggling economies or, especially in developed markets, because most sales growth over the past few years has come from higher prices and pet owners buying premium or superpremium petfoods, not because of actual volume growth.

In other cases, a lower revenue figure may mean that for 2013, we were able to find more accurate data for that particular company than what was reported in previous years. So that company may not have actually experienced a decline in revenue for 2013. The same is true for a significant revenue increase from one year to the next; that may be due to actual large growth or merely to better data.

To compile and update the database, we collect information and data from every available resource, including our circulation list and member lists of petfood associations worldwide. We also use other sources such as business and government reports, other third-party data (like Euromonitor International’s, in some cases) and the companies’ own websites, annual reports and responses to our questionnaire. For some companies, little data is available.

From all those sources, we piece together the profile of each company in the database and, from those, cull the top 35 globally based on annual revenue. You can currently find more data about them at www.petfoodindustry.TopPetfoodCompanies.html, in addition to previous years’ data on nearly 300 more companies. Starting in March, when we launch our brand new website, you can find 2013 data on all the companies in the database: now 362 in all. Those companies include new additions this year, including 36 from Latin America (mostly Brazil, with 27). This reflects that region’s growing power and influence on the global petfood market.

Currently, all companies in the database have at least one year, often more, of data such as top brands, annual revenue, number of facilities, employees and new products. Based on information available, the data is more complete for some companies than others.
