Veterinarians from BluePearl Veterinary Partners want to ensure pet owners feed safe food to their pets in the wake of a number of petfood recalls. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA New Link)'s website, there have been six petfood recalls due to Salmonella since March, affecting several brands.
"We want to make sure that people are aware of these recalls and taking the information seriously," said Dr. Neil Shaw, chief medical officer of BluePearl Veterinary Partners. "One of the ways we intend to help is by educating the public and encouraging people to talk with their family veterinarians about the most recent recalls."
BluePearl Veterinary Partners is reminding pet owners that Salmonella in contaminated products does not just affect animal health but also poses a risk to humans who handle contaminated pet products. This is especially true if consumers have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Common symptoms of Salmonella in pets include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, fever and abdominal discomfort.
"More importantly, any time you notice a medical problem or a significant change in your pet's behavior, you should take him or her to your family veterinarian or nearest emergency veterinary hospital as soon as possible," said Shaw.
