Mondi Group announced the acquisition of Kalenobel, a Turkish flexible packaging manufacturer, for €90 million (US$100 million) on a debt-and-cash-free basis. Kalenobel, headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey with two production facilities in Kırklareli, Turkey, will become part of Mondi’s consumer goods packaging business and will be renamed Mondi Kalenobel.

Established in 1955, Kalenobel is a Turkish consumer packaging company that produces flexible consumer packaging for ice cream and other applications as well as aseptic cartons. Its products include ice cream cone sleeves and lids, push up tubes, squeeze-ups and paper cups.

“We are delighted that Kalenobel is joining Mondi and adding to our existing presence in Turkey,” Peter J Oswald, CEO Mondi Europe & International, said in a press release. “It allows us to offer customers a broader range of products and is in line with our strategy to grow Mondi’s consumer packaging business.”

Mondi’s consumer packaging strategy has incorporated functionality. Functionality in pet food packaging has taken on a more complex meaning in recent years, not only must it speak to ease-of-use for potential customers, but manufacturers are now eyeing the space options provided by innovative packaging design as potential for their branding messages.

“We’re seeing a trend among pet food manufacturers towards the use of square-bottom bags, which can be printed on six sides including the bottom,” said Ross Bushnell, president of Mondi Jackson, Consumer Goods Packaging. “This gives petfood manufacturers 360 degrees of real estate to present their logos and brand promotions. Smaller square bags will stand upright on shelves, while larger ones can lay horizontally on pallets in big box stores. Consumers can see the brand from any angle.”
