The difference between the human and pet food markets is shrinking quickly, said David Sprinkle, publisher and research director at Packaged Facts, in a video from Petfood Forum 2016.

“Even the gap between when the trends hit the human and the pet market has really just receded,” said Sprinkle. “All the issues are there, including the biggest issue about your further processed versus your minimally processed foods.

Some of these trends that influence both human and pet food industries include local, organic and non-GMO ingredients, along with low-carb recipes. The popularity of gluten-free human diets helped to push grain-free pet foods into prominence, said Sprinkle.

“About the same percent of consumers buy organic [human] foods as pet foods, among pet owners,” said Sprinkle.

However, Sprinkle noted that some of the same obstacles hold these trends back in the human and pet food industries. Although people wish to purchase local or organic foods, they may live far from sources, and purchasing conventional foods may be more convenient or affordable.
