Pet food professionals have the opportunity to learn about one of the industry’s latest ingredient trends, whole and ancient grains, at Petfood Industry’s inaugural Petfood R&D Showcase: Going with the Grain. The event, which will take place October 10–12, 2017, will be held at Kansas State University (KSU) in Manhattan, Kansas, USA, and will include interactive labs and networking events hosted by pet food industry experts.

October 10 will provide plenty of networking opportunities, with optional plant tours in the afternoon and a welcome reception in the evening.

October 11 officially opens the Showcase with several presentations from industry experts on topics related to whole and ancient grains in pet food. Among them:

  • Harnessing Cereal Crop Diversity for Improved Health; Dr. Davina Rhodes, assistant professor in the Department of Agronomy, KSU
  • Real Nutrition for Real Working Dogs: Finding the Right Source of Energy Regardless of the Name; Dr. Tim Hunt, owner, Dr. Tim’s Pet Food Company LLC
  • Using Grain-based Diets to Maximize Pet Food Safety; Dr. Cassie Jones, associate professor, Department of Animal Sciences & Industry, KSU
  • Kill-step Validation for Food Safety; Dr. Kantha Channaiah, directory of microbiology, AIB International

October 12 continues the theme with six interactive lab stations focusing on whole and ancient grain ingredients. Participants will rotate to each station in groups throughout the day, learning:

  • How to leverage the power of natural malted, sprouted and over value-added grain ingredients in pet food and treat applications.
  • What the differences are between extruding a grain-free formula and an ancient grain diet.
  • How to utilize different ancient grains in the preparation of baked pet treats.
  • How to utilize botanical-based color solutions for coloring dog-friendly granola bars made from ancient grains.

For a full schedule of speakers, topics and interactive labs, as well as to take advantage of early bird registration (through September 10, 2017), visit www.PetfoodForumEvents.com.
