Washington, USA, church breaks world record for petfood collected in seven days
Living Hope Church in Vancouver, Washington, USA, recently collected 19,600 pounds of petfood in seven days to break a Guinness world record held for seven years by a South African supermarket. The collection of petfood by the church sets a new world record for "Largest donation of pet food in seven days," according to the World Record Academy.

South African petfood industry shows potential for manufacturers
South African pet owners spend nearly ZAR5 billion (US$550.7 million) per year on petfood for dogs, cats and other pets, according to Pet Food Industry Association of South Africa. Just 20 percent of the country’s dogs and 35 percent of cats are fed with commercial petfood from about 200 brands available, says the association’s executive director, Barry Hundley, which means many opportunities exist here for petfood manufacturers.

PFIA confirms South African dog deaths from aflatoxin contamination
The Pet Food Industry Association in South Africa confirmed that dog deaths continued into May, after three dog food brands were ordered to be removed from store shelves in April due to aflatoxin contamination, according to reports. The Department of Agriculture ordered the Hi Pro, Buddies and Legends petfood brands be removed from store shelves, following the initial deaths of 12 dogs in Gauteng, South Africa.

The Pet Institute of South Africa reported that at least 21 dogs have died from eating contaminated dry dog food. The dogs were diagnosed by the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in Gauteng, South Africa, as having died of aflatoxocosis.

The Pet Food Industry Association of Southern Africa (PFI) has vowed to eliminate petfood fraud in 2011 and protect South African pet owners from "rogue petfood manufacturers." PFI "will put all its forces and energy behind cleaning up any illegal practices in the petfood industry that harm the image of the industry and may possibly place pets at risk," according to an association statement.
