Market research company Mintel released a new study on the UK petfood and pet supplies market.
Sales of dog food in 2012 reached a record Â£1 billion (US$1.49 billlion), thanks to growth in popularity of pet treats. Snacks and treats accounted for 24 percent of all dog food sales, up 6 percent from 2011 to 2012 to reach Â£239 million (US$356.48). Natural pet treats increased 8 percent over the same one-year period to reach Â£40 million (US$59.66 million).
Still in its infancy, cell-cultured meat is being looked at for its possibilities, but environmental challenges exist, as well.
