Updated pet food ingredient database simplifies research

Webinar to demonstrate improved pet food ingredient search capabilities of the ingredient decks of dog and cat food sold in the US

While researching the development or marketing of a new cat or dog food product, you need to know how many other products on the market use a specific ingredient — and exactly where it’s appearing in their ingredient decks.

In the past, finding that information was a herculean task and could take hours of painstaking research, contact with ingredient suppliers and untold Google searches. Now there’s a better way: The Dog and Cat Food Ingredient Center.

The Ingredient Center is a searchable database of more than 7,000 formulas for dog and cat food sold in the US. The database can be searched by manufacturer name or by inclusion or exclusion of specific ingredients. It returns the full ingredient deck and part of the guaranteed analysis of all matching results.

New search functions

Two major upgrades to the ingredient search feature — an “or” search and a “wild card” search — have been added and are available to full subscribers. These updates, and their impact on an improved user experience, will be the topic of a webinar on February 20, 2018, at 10 a.m. CST.

The Dog and Cat Food Ingredient Center can be found at

When the search tool was launched in spring 2017, users could include or exclude multiple ingredients, but only as an “and” search. As the database contains ingredients as exactly listed on product labels, it has multiple versions of the same ingredient in the database. To get an accurate listing of products using chicken meal, the user had to run multiple searches (for example, chicken meal, chicken byproduct meal, chicken by-product meal and other variations) and combine results to get an accurate tally.

The search tool has been upgraded to let the user choose between an “and” or “or” search when including multiple ingredients. This allows one search to be done that returns every variation of a specific ingredient or group of ingredients. The chosen ingredients are all highlighted in the search results.

The search tool has been further improved by the “wild card” search, indicated by an asterisk. If searching for eggs, for example, the user will have two options: eggs or eggs*. The option with the asterisk will return all recipes that have any ingredient that includes eggs — chicken eggs, dried eggs, dried whole eggs and so forth. If that result is too broad, the user can narrow it down by using the “or” search for specific ingredients.

The database is updated monthly with new products that have entered the market and changes to existing products.

The webinar will include a full demonstration of these new search features. The webinar is free to attend, but registration is required. Register for the webinar by clicking here.
