Participants completing this course will become familiar with fundamentals of nutritional composition of foods, the techniques for their analysis, principles of animal nutrition, methods for evaluating nutrient requirements for animals, and various nutritional idiosyncrasies of companion animals. Species discussed will include dogs, cats, exotic birds, pet rodents such as the rabbit, gerbil, guinea pig, and hamster, along with a brief overview of reptiles, and fresh and saltwater aquarium fishes. Students will need an elementary understanding of chemistry/biochemistry, nutrition, and animal science or husbandry.
