Just Food for Dogs recalled all batches of their turducken dog food after the product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, according to a statement from the company posted by Dog Food Advisor. The Listeria contamination was traced back to green beans.

Just Food for Dogs expanded the recall to two other recipes: beef and russet potato, and fish and sweet potato. The company has notified the United States Food and Drug Administration, since the contaminated green beans may have entered the human food supply as well. The dog food company stated that this is the first recall in their history.

History of Just Food for Dogs recall

The recall occurred after a customer reported that her dogs became ill after eating the Just Food for Dogs turducken formulation. The customer switched to feeding her dogs a different formulation. The dogs recovered within a day. The customer sent the food back to Just Food for Dogs. Testing confirmed the presence of Listeria.

Just Food for Dogs is offering account credit to all customers who purchased the affected recipes between November 1, 2017 and January 14, 2018.

The dog food company is now preparing their : beef and russet potato, and fish and sweet potato formulation without green beans.

Effects of Listeria in dogs and humans

Listeria monocytogenes can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Pets with Listeria monocytogenes infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
