On March 27, Simmons Pet Food announced a strategic decision to further centralize production and distribution by closing the canning facility in Streetsville, Ontario, Canada, by the end of the year.
The closure will affect approximately 190 team members working at the Streetsville location. Simmons said it is committed to supporting all impacted team members during this transition period. The company will offer comprehensive support packages, including separation pay and career counseling services to assist team members in finding new employment opportunities.
"Over the last three years, Simmons Pet Food has invested aggressively in expanding capacity and capabilities in Emporia, Kansas, and Dubuque, Iowa, with the intent to strengthen and grow our business," said Scott Salmon, president of Simmons Pet Food. "This is the next step in that strategic plan to position Simmons Pet Food as the most trusted industry partner.
"The Streetsville location has been an important part of our company’s history," continued Salmon. "We are deeply grateful for the hard work and dedication of all our team members in Streetsville and are fully committed to supporting them through this transition."
The centralization of operations will enable Simmons Pet Food to leverage advancements in optimized production processes, packaging automation, and new distribution center locations to better serve its customers. Recent additions of two distribution centers in Edgerton, Kansas, and Dubuque, Iowa, support the primary canning locations in Emporia, Kansas, and Dubuque, Iowa.
According to Petfood Industry's Top Petfood Companies, Simmons Pet Food is a North American private-label and contract manufacturer of wet pet food. The company supplies top brands and retailers with products in various formats, including cans, pouches and cups.
