The Top Petfood Companies Database on www.petfoodindustry.com has been expanded with more than 190 new listings and, in some cases, more complete data. On these pages, you will find information on the top 10%-or top 30 global petfood companies by annual revenue, based on 2012 sales data where available. This list (Table 1) highlights some new players that are growing via acquisitions, new product sales and other means.

In addition to this information, you can find more about each of these companies-plus 283 more-in the Top Pet Companies Database. To use the database, you have to register and log in www.petfoodindustry.com; registration is free and simple to do. If your company is missing from the online database, or you wish to add to or correct the data in it, please contact us at [email protected].

The list of  30 top petfood companies, indeed the entire database, has been shaped by a flurry of merger and acquisition activity, perhaps in 2012 more than other years. That activity has continued in 2013, so you can expect that when the Top Petfood Companies Database is updated at the end of 2014 with 2013 data, the list will change yet again.

For example, in September 2012, C&D Foods, a private label petfood manufacturer based in Ireland, acquired Arovit Petfood, another private label player, catapulting C&D into this year's top 30 list (and causing Arovit to drop out of the 2012 database listings altogether). Yet in October 2013, C&D sold one of its acquired dry petfood facilities to three independent investors, forming a new Arovit Dry Petfood A/S that will be in the 2013 database. (For more about recent petfood M&A activity, see p. 6.)

The top 30 list also includes new names or changes in ranking because of economic and market influences. Some companies from Japan have fallen a few places down the list because the Japanese petfood market is mature and has stagnated along with the country's overall economy. Likewise, the lingering global recession had an impact in Brazil, which in turn affected 2012 sales for some of the leading petfood companies there-though a rebound is expected for 2013 considering Brazil is the fastest-growing pet care market globally and has now overtaken Japan as the second-largest petfood market (behind the US).

We found this  and other information for the database by collecting data from every available resource, including our circulation list and member lists of petfood associations worldwide. We also used other sources such as business and government reports, other third-party data (like Euromonitor International's, in some cases) and the companies' own websites, annual reports and responses to our questionnaire.

From all those sources, we pieced together the profile of each company in the database and, from those, culled the top 30 based on annual revenue for this article. We acknowledge, however, that the database is missing some key players in the industry as well as important information on some companies that are included. For example, we were able to find annual revenue for only 112 of the 313 companies. Data on production volume is especially difficult to find. If you have information that might help fill in any gaps or correct data here or in the database, please let us know by emailing [email protected].

This article and the database reflect each company's status as of the end of 2012; therefore, events such as mergers and acquisitions that happened in 2013 will not be reflected until we update the database later in 2014. We have tried to note those events where applicable, including in a field called "milestones."

Recent significant events  for the top global petfood companies by region also appear in Table 2, where you will find a link that will take you directly to the company's full listing on www.petfoodindustry.com. There you will see a more complete summary and additional data, such as types of products offered, the company's main brands, regions where the company sells its products and, in some cases, number of employees, plants and other facilities. You can also find the same for the other companies in the database.

Once you have registered or logged in to use the database (which is free), you can also search it by company name, geographic markets served or key product categories. We hope you find the new Top Petfood Companies Database to be a useful resource.
