These ancient grains are cereals and pseudo-cereals which have not had as much genetic selection pressure to that of our conventional commodity grains. So, their agronomic yields and starch content are much lower as might be expected, but they tend to be more concentrated in proteins, phytonutrients and fibers. So, they process a bit differently and they provide a bit of a different nutritional platform to the animal. Greg Aldrich, PhD, president of Pet Food & Ingredient Technology Inc., is an independent nutritionist specializing in foods, ingredients and nutrition for companion animals, as well as research professor and petfood program coordinator for the petfood research production program at Kansas State University. He writes a monthly column for Petfood Industry magazine on ingredient issues. Aldrich earned his doctorate in nutrition from the University of Illinois, a master of science from the University of Missouri and bachelor of science from Kansas State. He has held management and technical positions with Co-op Feeds, the Iams Co., Kemin Industries Inc. and Menu Foods Ltd. He is a member of the American Society of Animal Science, American Society for Nutrition and American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition.
Will Henry, director of technology/R&D for Extru-Tech Inc., holds an associate’s degree and bachelor’s degree in engineering. He has been an integral part of the pet food extrusion industry for more than 20 years. For the past 13 years, his focus has been in the area of research, both in the enhancement of the single screw extruder production architecture and the development of new products for the pet food and treats market.
