Pets are not furry humans, and pet food safety management systems are not furry food safety management systems. Investigations of several pet food safety incidents have uncovered that manufacturers of pet food and pet food ingredients usually apply human food safety management principles to their risk assessments. While it is not untrue that there are definite similarities, the differences in risk and risk management cannot be overlooked. For example, hazards potentially leading to nutritional imbalance or inadequacy are unique to animal feed and are often excluded from the risk assessment. David Rosenblatt headshotDr. David Rosenblatt, head of learning and academic services at Sher Consulting and Training, a Mérieux NutriSciences subsidiary

Dr. Rosenblatt received his D.V.M. from the Hebrew University in 1993. He worked in Unilever Israel as company veterinarian, R&D manager for pet food, and SHEQA (Safety, Health, Environment & QA) Manager for 9 years. He joined the Standards Institution of Israel as head of the Food Sector and senior educator, where he worked for 4 years. He is a lead auditor for numerous international standards. In 2005 he joined Sher Consulting and Training, a Mérieux NutriSciences subsidiary, as Head of Learning and Academic Services. Dr. Rosenblatt teaches companion animal nutrition and food safety at the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine. He has lectured in numerous conferences and workshops on food and petfood safety and quality management, including Petfood Forum Asia, Europe and US and on several occasions. He is regularly invited to lecture in different countries. Dr. Rosenblatt contributed to the textbook “Petfood Technology” as writer and chapter editor, and his articles have been published often in the Petfood Industry Magazine. He is a member of the American Academy of Veterinary Nutritionists, the International Association for Food Protection and an FDA recognized PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual). Dr. Rosenblatt is an FDA certified Lead Instructor for FSMA.
