Animal nutrition company invests in German production facility
Family owned Leiber, a German manufacturer of specialty products made from brewers’ yeast, is investing 7.5 million euros (US$9.8 million) in its production facility in Lower Saxony, Germany, in 2013. The plant's recent groundbreaking, which comes three years after construction of a spray-drying tower and finished goods warehouse were completed, will result in an additional spray-drying tower and doubling of storage capacity to 4,000 pallet slots when finished.

Brazil pet products association organizes local companies at Agroexpo XIX
The Brazilian Association of Pet Products Industry, Abinpet, through the Pet Brazil Project, developed in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, will coordinate a number of Brazilian companies at Agroexpo XIX, an international tradeshow aimed at entrepreneurs and professionals in the agriculture, livestock and agribusiness sectors. The fair will be held from July 11-21 at the International Exhibition Center CORFERIAS in Bogotá, Colombia.

FDA, Center for Food Safety fail to submit FSMA regulation schedule
The US Food and Drug Administration and the Center for Food Safety were unable to reached an agreement on a proposed schedule for Food Safety Modernization Act deadlines in compliance with a court's order to do so by May 20. FDA was ordered to set the schedule after being sued by the Center for Food Safety for missing several statutory deadlines in implementing FSMA.

Petfood bowl, scooper may be contributors to pet obesity epidemic
The size of a pet's food bowl and the tools used to scoop out the petfood are likely contributing to the epidemic of pet obesity, according to a study published in the April 2012 issue of the Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition. The four-treatment trial study, conducted by researchers at the University of Tennessee's College of Veterinary Medicine, included 54 dogs that consumed kibbled dog food in the following serving combinations:

Hartz Mountain Corp. issues recall for Wardley Betta fish food
Hartz Mountain Corporation has issued a voluntary recall of one lot of Wardley Betta fish food because products in that lot have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall was initiated after Salmonella was detected in a lot of the fish food during routine microbial product testing.

Petfood maker Royal Canin and Banfield Charitable Trust are teaming up to support pet owner retention programs, as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says that more than 2 million pets are surrendered annually to shelters by families that encounter hardships. The "40,000 Pounds in 40 Days" Facebook challenge runs through July 26.

Natura Pet Products is voluntarily recalling lots of its dry petfood brands because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall applies to all lot codes, UPC's and package sizes with expiration dates prior to June 10, 2014, of the following petfood products.
