AFIA opposes bill to delay commodity trading reforms
The American Feed Industry Association and a national coalition of groups representing commodity-dependent businesses and consumers announced opposition to a House bill that AFIA says would delay new trading reforms provided in 2010's Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. The proposed legislation, H.R.1573, would extend the deadline for implementation and enforcement of most Dodd-Frank Act reforms of trading in the derivatives markets, including commodity futures, options and swaps markets, from July 21, 2011, until January 1, 2013, according to AFIA.

Hamlet Protein investing in new US plant
Hamlet Protein, a Denmark-based manufacturer of ingredients for the petfood and animal feed markets, is expanding to the US with a new plant in Findlay, Ohio, in early 2012. First producing products for the pig and dairy markets from the area’s large soybean crops, the plant will also soon produce petfood ingredients, said Ole Hansen, business development director, during Victam International 2011 in Cologne, Germany.

Charlee Bear Products adds new dog treat flavor, joins Facebook
Charlee Bear Products launched its latest dog treat flavor, Chicken Soup & Garden Veggie, in addition to a revamped website and Facebook page. The Chicken Soup & Garden Veggie flavor comes in a 16-ounce zip pouch with more than 400 treats, made of real chicken broth, garden vegetables and chicken liver, according to the company.

The Buhler Technology Group acquired the company Tijdhof Persmatrijzen with headquarters in Oldenzaal, Netherlands, in April 2011. This manufacturer of dies and rollers for feed pellet mills and petfood will be integrated into Buhler's Feed & Biomass business unit.

Nature’s Logic announced that its petfood lines will soon be available in nine All The Best Pet Care stores in the Seattle, Washington, USA, area. Nature's Logic said that its all-natural kibble, canned and raw frozen petfoods will be available in the stores by May 6.

Dog deaths linked in South Africa petfood scare
The Pet Institute of South Africa reported that at least 21 dogs have died from eating contaminated dry dog food. The dogs were diagnosed by the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in Gauteng, South Africa, as having died of aflatoxocosis.

Kemin to purchase ADF's petfood technology, equipment
Kemin Industries Inc. and American Dehydrated Foods Inc. have reached an acquisition agreement that allows Kemin to purchase property, equipment and assets related to ADF’s spray drying technology for petfood products. The transaction is expected to close on June 30.
