Fecal calprotectin concentrations in dogs with chronic diarrhea
The objectives of this study were to evaluate fecal calprotectin concentrations in healthy dogs and dogs with chronic diarrhea, to identify cutoff values for fecal calprotectin concentrations for use in differentiating dogs with chronic diarrhea and a canine chronic enteropathy clinical activity index (CCECAI) <12 from dogs with chronic diarrhea and a CCECAI ≥12, and to evaluate the association between histologic evidence of intestinal mucosal changes and fecal calprotectin concentrations in dogs with chronic diarrhea.

Dietary management of feline lower urinary tract symptoms
The objective of this review is to discuss common medical conditions contributing to feline lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), and to present currently utilized and potential preventative dietary modifications. Feline LUTS are a set of clinical conditions with similar symptoms related to inappropriate urine elimination due to a combination of genetics, stress and frustration reactions, environment, and medical condition(s) (e.g., idiopathic cystitis, urolithiasis, urethral obstruction and urinary tract infection).

Digestibility of soybeans fed to adult dogs and puppies
The objective of this study was to evaluate the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), ME and fecal characteristics of adult dogs and puppies fed raw soybeans and their by-products. Six treatments were evaluated: one reference diet based on a maize-poultry by-product meal and five extruded diets containing 70% of the ingredients of the reference diet and 30% of a soybean processed product.

Aflatoxin a concern for petfood industry in summer, experts say
Grain experts say a toxic mold residue that attacked the 2012 US corn crop may become even more problematic this summer and fall as farmers blend off tainted corn supplies from storage. This is a concern in the petfood industry as manufacturers work to avoid contamination in their final products and minimize petfood recalls due to aflatoxin.

Sensient Colors LLC, a business unit of Sensient Technologies Corp., expanded its research and development efforts globally by developing an Advanced Emulsion Technology for natural colors. This new emulsion technology combines multiple oil- and water-based natural colors to provide a complex color matrix in a single delivery system, achieving new natural color shades.

Kemin investigates raw material supplier
Kemin selects raw material suppliers after review and evaluation, and receives certificates of analysis on each lot of raw material purchased from the suppliers. Although the company performs additional testing at its own laboratory to verify suppliers' claims on the certificates of analysis, Kemin is investigating one of its tocopherol suppliers.

AAFCO updates dog and cat feeding trial protocols
As discussed in last month's column, the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) Pet Food Committee accepted recommendations from the expert panel (with minor amendments) for revision to the AAFCO Dog and Cat Food Nutrient Profiles at its January 2013 meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. At the same meeting, the committee also accepted recommended revisions to the dog and cat feeding trial protocols, which may be used as an alternative means to substantiate the nutritional adequacy of "complete and balanced" petfoods.

The objective of this study was to compare myocardial cytokine expression in dogs with naturally occurring cardiac or systemic diseases and dogs without cardiac or systemic diseases. Myocardial tissue samples were taken from seven systemic disease-affected dogs (SDDs), seven cardiac disease-affected dogs (CDDs) and eight control dogs.
