Global Food Safety Initiative recognizes scope extension for feed
The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) board of directors has announced that SQF has successfully added the scope of feed to the scopes for which they have already achieved recognition against the GFSI Guidance Document Sixth Edition. This is the first GFSI-recognized scheme to cover the scope of feed, which includes the production of animal feed and the processing of petfood products.

Uniqair, Purdue University odor lab develop odor sampling procedure
A special odor sampling procedure with nitrogen dilution has been developed by Uniqair and Purdue University's odor lab for odor samples with high humidity from fishfeed and petfood dryers. The nitrogen will preserve the odor and prevent condensation for more accurate odor concentration test results, according to the developers.

A cause to consider: promoting the benefits of pet ownership
Evidence that owning a pet provides human health benefits continues to mount: A recent study by Rebecca Johnson, an associate professor at the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing, College of Veterinary Medicine and director of the school's Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction, shows that having a pet can lower cortisol, the stress hormone, in aging adults, while increasing oxytocin, prolactin and norepinephrine (hormones related to joy, nurturing and relaxation).

MPM Products, manufacturer of the Applaws and Encore petfood brands, is celebrating after selling its 100 millionth unit of wet cat food worldwide. The Manchester, England-based company is seeing sales of its brands continue to grow and is on track to reach its target of £24 million (US$39.1 million) turnover by the end of 2013.
