P&G, once an important player in the worldwide pet food business, sold its stakes in the division in 2014. Mars Petcare acquired the majority of P&G's petcare products, manufacturing sites and employees in a US$2.9 billion cash transaction; the remainder of P&G's petcare assets (in the E.U.) were sold to Spectrum.

2014 (September): Spectrum Brands Holdings Inc. acquires the remainder of P&G's pet care business in Europe, completing P&G's exit from the pet food division. 2014 (April): Mars Inc. agrees to buy P&G's pet food business in North America, Latin America and other selected countries for US$2.9 billion. 2013 (September): P&G CEO A.G. Lafley tells investors the company is seeking to sell its under-performing business units, which likely includes its pet food brands. Speculation follows that Del Monte is a potential buyer.
