Natural petfood: It’s all about the ingredients
The most important marketing and product trends in natural petfoods have always involved—quite naturally—what the products are made of. But the ingredients thrust gained much momentum as a result of the spring 2007 petfood recalls, and the petfood industry’s fixation on ingredients continues to this day as product recalls keep the consumer focus on product quality and marketers tussle to make their products stand out from the superpremium pack.

Feeding high-omega-3 diet to dogs with OA
The aim of the trial was to compare the effect of a veterinary therapeutic diet (VTD) rich in omega-3 fatty acids from fish origin to a regular diet used as control (CTR) in dogs afflicted by naturally occurring osteoarthritis (OA). Thirty privately owned dogs had lameness confirmed by an orthopedic examination, stifle/hip OA and locomotor disability based on the peak of the vertically oriented ground reaction force (PVF) measured using a force platform.

Benefits of dietary fiber in companion animal diets
Dietary fiber has long been an important ingredient in companion animal diets. Not until recently have we begun to understand the numerous benefits dietary fiber may have on dog and cat health and well-being. Recent work on prebiotics and understanding the benefits of a healthful large bowel microbiota has increased the interest in dietary fibers. In particular, the database regarding dietary fibers and prebiotics is growing as it relates to pet animal nutrition and health.
