Petfood manufacturer Nestlé reports 20 percent pet care sales increase
Petfood manufacturer Nestlé reported more than a 20 percent increase in sales its petcare segment for the first nine months of 2012. In the Americas, petcare maintained positive growth, with good performances in the cat category from Friskies and Fancy Feast, as well as the Beneful line for dogs.

Cambrian Pet Foods to invest in new petfood production line
Cambrian Pet Foods is investing £1.4 million (US$2.2 million) to expand its petfood production line and create 22 new jobs. With help from a £500,000 (US$801,104) through the Economic Growth Fund, the petfood company will install a new petfood production line to expand into the growing market for premium petfood in convenience packaging.

Vitakraft to produce dog, cat food for Asian market
Vitakraft has entered into cooperation with Wanpy, a Chinese manufacturer of dog and cat treats, to expand its petfood offerings into the Asian market. As part of the cooperation, a new petfood factory in Yantai in Shandong province is expected to begin production at the end of 2012.

Brazilian Association of Pet Products Industry attends Zoosphere 2012
The Brazilian Association of Pet Products Industry, Abinpet, recently hosted a Brazilian pavilion at Zoosphere 2012, the Russian trade show of products and services for pets, which was held in October 11-13. Three Abinpet-associated companies took part in the Brazilian pavilion at Zoosphere: Brazilian Pet Foods, Eccopetz and Guabi Group, all of which exhibited new products for dogs and cats, including petfood and natural pet treats.

Researchers examine health of cats fed high-protein diets
Researchers at the University of Illinois looked into the common belief that cats, carnivorous by nature, are healthiest when fed high-protein diets. A team of researchers examined the effect of dietary protein-to-carbohydrate ratio on the gut microbiomes of growing kittens.

Council of Agriculture promotes petfood bill in Taiwan
The Council of Agriculture recently promoted its petfood bill at the Legislative Yuan public hearing, stressing that Taiwan lacks comprehensive laws to regulate the local petfood industry. First introduced in March and currently under review, the proposed “Pet Food Safety Management Act” would require commercial petfood manufacturers to provide ingredients labeling and comply with residue levels for harmful substances.

Austria Pet Food to build US$32.7 million petfood production plant
Austria Pet Food is building a new 9,000-square-metre petfood plant in Pöttelsdorf, Austria. Production of dog and cat food at the plant is expected to start in the second quarter of 2013.

Wenger Manufacturing to host petfood safety seminar
Corporate Project Services, a division of Wenger Manufacturing, will host a food safety seminar focusing on petfood processing, February 26 through March 1. A group of industry professionals will share food safety information as it applies directly to each step of the petfood production process, from plant design to sourcing raw materials, production, sanitation and packaging.

Research and Markets offers new global pet care market report
Despite economic uncertainty, the global pet care market continues to grow in 2012, with retail values approaching US$94 billion, according to Research and Markets' latest report, "Pet Care Forecast Revisit 2012: How Resilient Is the Global Market?" The report, by Euromonitor International, projects sales will continue to grow between 2012 and 2017, thanks to the humanization of pets and strength in emerging markets, although retail value prospects were downgraded from previous Euromonitor forecasts.
