Vet offers consumer tips for reading petfood ingredient labels

In a recent Huffington Post blog, Donna Solomon, a veterinarian at the Animal Medical Center of Chicago, Illinois, USA, says she believes the best pet owners are those that are well-informed about pet care and pet nutrition, so she offers some consumer tips for reading petfood labels. Solomon says that, according to regulations, if a product name includes a meat, poultry or fish ingredient with no descriptor words after it, like "nugget" or "dinner," that ingredient must represent 95 percent of the petfood's total product weight, not including water, or, the ingredient must represent 70 percent of the product weight if it includes water.

Nordenia reports 9.9 percent sales growth in 2011

During the 2011 financial year, flexible petfood packaging manufacturer Nordenia International continued its strong growth, reporting that sales rose by 9.9 percent to €880.8 million (US$1.17 billion). Sales volume grew by 1.4 percent to 244,670 tons, compared to 2010, and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization fell 4.4 percent below the previous year to €101.1 million (US$133.8 million).

Pet Planet, a pet health-supply chain, recently launched an online pet Health and Nutrition Kiosk, H.A.N.K, in all stores across North America. H.A.N.K., a custom Web-based program developed by Pet Planet, provides recommendations to customers on petfood, supplements, pet treats, toys and more, after customers answer a few questions to create a pet-health profile.

Pet Food Brazil Manual says 69 percent of 2011 pet industry revenue came from petfood

The Brazilian Association of the Pet Product Industry updated its Pet Food Brazil Manual, which says the country now has one pet for every two inhabitants, causing the pet industry to reach BRL12.2 billion (US$6.5 billion) in 2011, with 69 percent of the revenue from petfood. The Pet Food Brazil manual was released as an update to the older, PIQ PET Manual, which was developed six years ago by the association's technical groups, comprised of professionals from petfood companies and universities.

Manufacturers, retailers discuss functional petfood ingredients

Nestle Purina increases first-quarter 2012 pet product sales

Petfood manufacturer Nestlé Purina Pet Care increased its first-quarter fiscal 2012 global pet product sales by 7.7 percent to CHF 2.545 billion (US$2.8 billion). According to the petfood company's financial statement, Purina experienced double-digit growth in North and South America during the quarter thanks to strong performances in the Friskies, Purina ONE Beyond and Beneful Baked Delights brands.

FDA publishes Food, Veterinary Medicine Program Strategic Plan 2012-2016

The US Food and Drug Administration published the final draft of its “Food and Veterinary Medicine Program Strategic Plan 2012-2016,” which guides the administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine on petfood safety under the Food Safety Modernization Act. The administration's strategic plan aims to implement legislative mandates of the Food Safety Modernization Act, in which Congress requires the Food and Drug Administration to create a new food safety system.
