SPF launches new odor program for pleasant-smelling petfood
SPF, the palatability company, launched a new Feel Good Program that allows petfood manufacturers to create products that smell pleasing to pet owners while tasting good to pets, the company says. The program debuted at Victam Asia 2012, occurring February 15-17 in Bangkok, Thailand.

China petfood may contain dangerous preservative levels, consumer group finds
In a sampling of petfood, the Consumers' Foundation found some dog food sold in China may contain preservatives that could affect the health of dogs if too much is consumed, according to The China Post. The foundation found that eight out 20 dry dog food and canned dog food products purchased from retailers in September 2010 were found to contain sorbic acid.

DSHEA revisited for pet supplements?
In a presentation at the annual meeting of the National Animal Supplement Council a few months ago, a representative of the US Food and Drug Administration made a very interesting comment. He said that in FDA’s attempt to find “legal homes” for the plethora of unapproved ingredients currently on the market, one possibility is for FDA to reconsider the applicability of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) for products intended for animal consumption.

Comparing collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin for arthritic dogs
The study was conducted on client-owned, moderately arthritic dogs to evaluate therapeutic efficacy of type-II collagen (UC-II) alone or in combination with glucosamine hydrochloride (GLU) and chondroitin sulphate (CHO), and to determine their tolerability and safety. Dogs were treated daily for 150 days with placebo (Group I), 10 mg active UC-II (Group II), 2,000 mg GLU + 1,600 mg CHO (Group III) or UC-II + GLU + CHO (Group IV).

The animal feed industry is invited to submit presentations on advances in animal feed ingredients for the FIAAP Asia Conference 2012, which will take place in February alongside Victam Asia, in Bangkok, Thailand. The FIAAP Asia Conference, which will be held February 16, 2012, focuses on animal feed ingredients and additives.

The use of spray-dried plasma (SDP) as a superior binder in wet pet food is well recognized and commonly used in the industry. SDP is characterized by its well balanced technological properties highly appreciated in canned pet food products. Over 620 attend AFIA 2011 Purchasing and Ingredient Suppliers Conference
Over 620 members of the livestock feed and pet food industries attended the 2011 Purchasing and Ingredient Suppliers Conference, an annual three-day event of the American Feed Industry Association held in Las Vegas, Nev., from March 2 through 4. Tanya Dowda with Land O’Lakes Purina Feed provided the event's opening remarks and was followed by Al Gunderson, chairman of the IFEEDER board of trustees.

European Food Safety Authority issues guidance on petfood additives
The European Food Safety Authority Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed, FEEDAP, published a guidance for assessing additives in petfood. FEEDAP's opinion, "Guidance on the assessment of additives intended to be used in pets and other non food-producing animals," was published February 1 by EFSA Journal.

Petfood and pet supplements have always overlapped in terms of ingredients, but now the marketers making the products are becoming interchangeable. The line is being crossed from both sides, as more supplement marketers edge into food with function-infused chewable tablets and treats and as more petfood marketers delve into nutraceutical foods and treats.

What the future holds for petfood and supplements
The pet market continues to grow as a result of a constant stream of new and innovative products, a steadily growing aging animal population and the expanding role that pets play as family members. Further, the "humanization" of pets is exaggerating consumer demand for products and services that are as good (and sometimes better) as those available for people themselves.
