Researchers from the University of Illinois interested in finding a method to maintain healthy body weight in cats have looked at a previously suggested claim that increased meal frequency could help to increase overall physical activity. The idea is to feed cats the appropriate amount of food needed to maintain a healthy body weight, but to offer it in more frequent, smaller meals throughout the day.

Among the trends currently driving the US petfood industry, grain-free petfood is one of the most significant. Sales of grain-free petfood at US pet stores increased 28% in 2013, according to data from GfK, a company that tracks sales in more than 11,000 pet outlets (including national and regional chains, as well as neighborhood pet shops) via its retail and technology division.

Ten adult lean neutered male cats were used in two tests, both crossover studies composed of a 14-day adaptation period, followed by a seven-day measurement of physical activity.

This study aimed to identify factors contributing to the variation in urinary oxalate (Uox) excretion rate, Uox concentration and urine volume in healthy adult cats. A data set containing information on Uox excretion rate of 65 cats fed 252 diets with known dietary oxalate concentrations collected over a six-year period at a feline nutrition facility were analyzed.
