Petfood volume flat in 2013, new feed survey shows
The volume of petfood produced globally in 2013 grew less than 1% over 2012, from 20.5 million tons to 20.7 million, according to the just released 2014 Alltech Global Feed Survey. That's slightly less than the 1% growth reported for production of feed for all species, from 954 million tons in 2012 to 963 million in 2013. Petfood makes up only about 2% of that global total.

IBISWorld estimates that revenue for the online petfood and pet supply sales industry has increased in the past five years an average of 7.8% annually to $3.2 billion. Rising pet ownership in the United States and growth across the e-commerce sector have caused the industry to experience overall growth, despite the recession.

Bravo! Pet Foods is upgrading its heritage brand, introducing a new logo, slogan and packaging design with will officially debut during Orlando's Global Pet Expo, happening March 12–14, 2014. The updated logo features a brilliant red color that has become synonymous with the Bravo brand for easy recognition, while contemporizing the insignia with a softer, more approachable font, according to the company.

Red Flannel cat food recalled due to Salmonella risk
Minnesota-based PMI Nutrition LLC has voluntarily recalled bags of its Red Flannel cat food due to possible Salmonella contamination. There have been no reports of illness related to this product to date, according to the company, and the recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution after routine testing by the US Food and Drug Administration's Detroit District Office identified possible Salmonella contamination.

AVMA won't warn against feeding treats tied to illness, deaths
Despite reports of pet illness and deaths tied to jerky treats, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says it won’t warn pet owners against feeding the treats to their dogs, according to an NBC News report. The AVMA rejected a resolution this month that would have discouraged use of the jerky products until further evidence about safety is available.

First petfood M&A deal of 2014 portends more to come
The petfood and pet care industries have been a hotbed of merger and acquisition (M&A) activity for several years now; in fact, even during the recession, that activity picked up, unlike in most other industries. Thus, last week's announcement that Nestlé Purina PetCare had acquired Zuke's Performance Pet Nutrition, a maker of natural, functional treats, came as no real surprise to anyone in or watching our industry.
