The green effort: Petfood companies support sustainability
Staying sustainable may be a topical trend in the media or a consumer-driven marketing tool according to some, but I applaud petfood companies who go out of their way to make their production and facilities more eco-friendly. Shrinking your carbon footprint also significantly reduces costs-something even the staunchest cynic can't argue with.

Update: Pet treat market round-up
The pet treat market is often the place where bold marketing strategies, experimental blends of ingredients and clever packaging first meet the rest of the petfood and pet care sector. Petfood lines, loyal customers and overnight success stories can also sprout up from this fertile ground, so it’s important to keep abreast of the most novel, on-trend treats being introduced to the marketplace.

Will 2013 be another bad year for mycotoxins in petfood?
With the news last week that a scientist is studying Salmonella in space and, more importantly, gleaning important insights from the study, we can hope that this pathogen might become easier to control in petfood plants and everywhere else it shows up. (Because, after all, it's in the environment nearly everywhere.) That might help decrease the number of petfood recalls related to Salmonella each year.

In the US, at least 5 million pets enter animal shelters each year for a variety of reasons; it's difficult to find up-to-date data on how many are surrendered due to owners' inability to afford petfood or care.

Using the Internet to help offline petfood customers
The majority of shoppers now turn to the Internet for product information, and it's important to accommodate them as we build and promote our brand. However, it's vital to remember that they often take the information they find online and apply it to offline activities, including shopping.

The challenges of sourcing novel functional petfood ingredients
As a result of increased nutritional awareness and consumer demand for more nutritious foods made with better ingredients, we have seen in the past 25 years the emergence of the superior quality petfood segment. These novel foods are based on the inclusion of primarily natural and functional ingredients.
