Interpets 2012 draws record number of visitors, exhibitors
In 2012, the Japanese pet industry show Interpets drew more visitors than its first show in 2011, with 46,883 visitors in 2012 compared to 39,481 in 2011. Among those who attended Interpets, which took place August 23-26, were 9,836 pet industry professionals.

SuperZoo 2012 to host 871 pet product, services exhibitors
The World Pet Association has announced that its pet industry trade show SuperZoo 2012 has increased booth space by 18 percent over last year's show, with 871 exhibiting pet product and services companies. The show, which will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, September 11-13, will feature new pet market trends like all natural and organic products, high-tech accessories like programmable feeders and automatic doors, mobile services for seniors and their pets, and more.

Swedish dog food company appoints new marketing director
Swedish petfood company Lantmännen Doggy has appointed Anette Rosengren, currently the company's communication director, to replace Hans Nilsson as head marketing director. Lantmännen Doggy has been struggling with falling profits for some time now, which has been difficult, the company says.

PetFlow ships US$2.5 million in petfood, supplies in July
PetFlow.com, an online petfood retailer, set a record in July by shipping more than US$2.5 million in petfood and pet supplies, and the company projects it will generate more than US$30 million in sales by the end of the year. The online petfood retailer has seen much growth since its founding a little more than two years ago, now stocking more than 100 premium petfood brands, as well as a variety of other petfood brands and pet supplies.

Where does FDA stand on FSMA implementation?
The US Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is seemingly becoming a classic case of "hurry up and wait." When the act was signed into law by President Obama in January 2011, many players in the human food, petfood and animal feed industries began making an urgent case that food producers in all three industries needed to prepare, and fast, for new rules and regulations emanating from the law. Some experts even sounded notes of doom and gloom over concern that the new regulations would prove costly and onerous, especially for smaller manufacturers.

The Pet Cafe, a food truck sponsored by petfood maker Hill’s Pet Nutrition is touring the United States to promote the company’s Science Diet Ideal Balance line of dog and cat foods and treats. At each stop, free samples are given out to dogs and cats, while their owners receive coupons for petfood discounts.

DNA Pet Food Inc. has launched “Real Rewards,” an online points program that rewards independent pet specialty store employees and their customers with free petfood. Mexico Pet Expo draws more than 1,300 visitors from 10 countries
NürnbergMesse North America announced that its first Mexico Pet Expo & Conference was a success with 123 exhibitors from eight countries and a total of 1,352 visitors from 10 countries. Mexico Pet Expo also cooperates with the Mexican association of food manufacturers, La Asociación Mexicana de Productores de Alimentos A.C., which organized the “2nd Mexican Forum on Pet Food” that was held in conjunction with the show and aimed at petfood manufacturers.

Grow the market by encouraging pet ownership
Ownership of dogs and cats in the US has continued to rise in the two decades that the American Pet Products Association (APPA) has been conducting its National Pet Owners Survey. That's the good news. The not so rosy news is that since 2006, the increase in ownership has been very small -- for example, dog ownership increased just 1.5% in the 2011-12 survey from the previous one (2010), while cat ownership grew just 1.8%.

Global petfood market to reach US$74.8 billion in 2017
The global petfood market will grow by 4.2 percent annually over the next six years, increasing from US$58.6 billion in 2011 to US$74.8 billion by 2017, according to a report published by Transparency Market Research of Albany, New York, USA. The report projects the US market for petfood sales will increase 3.2 percent in 2012, growing at an annual rate of 3.5 percent over the next six years, from US$21.7 billion in 2011 to US$26.6 billion in 2017.
