The pet industry is expected to maintain a steady pace of growth, increasing by 33% over the next five years to US$67.7 billion in 2016, according to Mintel. Pet industry trends mirror the same trends and innovations in human markets, such as those in food quality and social media, according to Fiona O'Donnell, senior analyst at Mintel.

As 2011 comes to a close, the US economy continues to limp along, and shoppers continue to carefully weigh purchase decisions. Pet owner surveys conducted by Packaged Facts on a quarterly basis throughout the year highlight key trends, including the bright spots and weak spots likely to continue to shape the market in 2012.

In a September survey of US adults, Packaged Facts asked respondentsâ€™ agreement with this statement: â€œI like to indulge my pets with special food/chew treats.â€

The objectives of this study were to determine differences in apparent total tract energy and macronutrient digestibility, fecal and urine characteristics and serum chemistry of domestic cats fed raw and cooked meat-based diets and extruded diet. Dietary treatments included a high-protein extruded diet (EX, 57% crude protein), a raw beef-based diet (RB, 53% CP) and a cooked beef-based diet (CB, 52% CP) fed to nine adult female domestic shorthair cats.

Petco kicks off National Pet Food Drive on October 30

From October 30 through November 13, Petco and the Petco Foundation will host the second annual National Pet Food Drive to collect petfood and litter donations at stores in the United States. During the two-week drive, consumers can pick up extra food or litter during their shopping trip or bring unopened cans or bags from home, and drop it into the marked petfood collection bins located in each of the more than 1,100 Petco and Unleashed by Petco stores nationwide.
