Grain-free petfood: A top trend in the US pet market
Among the trends currently driving the US petfood industry, grain-free petfood is one of the most significant. Sales of grain-free petfood at US pet stores increased 28% in 2013, according to data from GfK, a company that tracks sales in more than 11,000 pet outlets (including national and regional chains, as well as neighborhood pet shops) via its retail and technology division.

US pet product supplier Central Garden & Pet reports Q1 results
US pet product supplier Central Garden & Pet Company reported 2014 first-quarter net sales of US$290.5 million, compared with US$292.5 million in the first quarter of 2013. The company's first-quarter operating loss improved to US$8.4 million, compared to an operating loss of US$13.1 million in the comparable period of 2013, according to the company.

Petland expands to Central, South America
International pet specialty group Petland is expanding its franchise borders into Central and South America, with stores opening in Brazil in early 2014. A master franchise agreement has also been signed for stores to open in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Honduras, according to the company.

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) will sponsor 13 feed-related events in 2014. The meetings will kick off in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, with the International Production & Procession Expo (IPPE), co-hosted with the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association and American Meat Institute, and end in Palm Springs, California, USA, at AFIA’s annual Equipment Manufacturers Conference.

Public tries to understand how to comply with FSMA animal food rule
A recent Food Safety News article captures reaction to the three public meetings held by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in late November and early December in College Park, Maryland, USA; Chicago, Illinois, USA; and Sacramento, California, USA, to discuss the animal food preventive controls rule under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The first meeting in College Park was attended mostly by organizations already familiar with FSMA, incuding the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), the International Warehouse Logistics Association and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

ADM to establish global headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, USA
Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), a supplier of petfood ingredients, has selected Chicago, Illinois, USA, as the location for its global headquarters and customer center. "While we considered other global hubs, Chicago emerged as the best location to provide efficient access to global markets while maintaining our close connections with US farmers, customers and operations," said ADM Chairman and CEO Patricia Woertz.

AFIA comments on FSMA at public meeting
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) on November 21 along with 90 other industry members attended the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Public Meeting to provide industry feedback on the proposed rule to establish current good manufacturing practice and hazard analysis and risk-based preventive controls for animal food. The meeting, held in College Park, Maryland, USA, was the first of three nationwide to be hosted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to answer questions and take part in dialogue surrounding the proposed animal food rule.

American Dehydrated Foods Inc. (ADF) and Rembrandt Enterprises Inc. (REI) announced the companies have reached an agreement to form a joint venture of their respective egg divisions, which are currently serving the petfood and animal feed industries. The new entity will operate as IsoNova Technologies LLC (IsoNova) and be headquartered in Springfield, Missouri, USA.

Horn, a North American distributor of specialty ingredients, has announced a new partnership with DSM Nutritional Products (DSM), a manufacturer of vitamins, carotenoids, other nutritional ingredients and premixes, to better serve the pet industry in the U.S. and Canada. DSM’s full portfolio of nutritional products and custom premixes is now available to Horn for distribution within its Animal Wellness business unit.
