Philippine imports of petfood to reach US$40 million in 2018
Petfood imports from the US grew by 12.56 percent in 2012 and are on track to be maintained for 2013, according to a report on petfood exports to the Philippines. The report on petfood exports to the Philippines says the country's imports of petfood from the US also rose in 2011, from US$19.9 million to US$22.4 million.

US pet ownership among singles rises, AVMA reports
Although the majority of US pet owners are families, the gap in pet ownership between families and single adults has significantly narrowed over the last five years, the American Veterinary Medical Association says. The number of single adults who own pets grew by 16.6 percent from 46.9 percent in 2006 to 54.7 percent in 2011, according to data from the AVMA 2012 US Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook.

Veterinary Medicine Caucus formed in US House
Veterinarians and congressmen, Kurt Schrader and Ted Yoho, have formed the Veterinary Medicine Caucus in the US House of Representatives in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of veterinary medicine to animal health and welfare, food safety, public health, research and the overall economy. The Veterinary Medicine Caucus, which other House members are encouraged to join, will also draft legislation and conduct briefings and hearings.

US pet obesity on the rise, Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says
US pet obesity rates continued to increase in 2012 with the number of overweight cats reaching an all-time high, according to the National Pet Obesity Awareness Day survey, conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. The survey found that 52.5 percent of dogs and 58.3 percent of cats are deemed overweight or obese by their veterinarian.

Every two years, the American Pet Products Association releases its APPA National Pet Owners Survey, usually during or just after its Global Pet Expotrade show. So we're in luck, because the 2013-2014 survey results just came out, showing US pet ownership at an all-time high of 68% of all US households in 2012.

Hill's Pet Canada launches Pet Dental Health Awareness campaign
Hill’s Pet Nutrition Canada launched the 2013 Pet Dental Health Awareness campaign to increase awareness of the connection between oral and overall health. “Periodontal disease is the most common problem veterinary health care teams see in dogs and cats,” said Susan Jones, D.V.M., director of veterinary affairs at Hill’s Pet Nutrition Canada.

APPA releases 2013-14 National Pet Owners Survey
The American Pet Products Association released the 2013-2014 National Pet Owners Survey, which found pet ownership in the United States is at a record. The survey indicated that pet ownership among all US households is 68 percent, an increase to 82.5 million pet-owning households in 2012.

US petfood manufacturing industry annual revenue nearly US$47 billion, report says
The US petfood manufacturing industry is comprised of nearly 200 companies with a combined annual global revenue of about US$47 billion, according to the Pet Food Manufacturing report from Research and Markets. Eight of the largest petfood companies account for about 85 percent of sales, the report says.

American Pet, a producer of small pet hays and small animal foods, has extended its offerings to include premium Green Dreamzzz recycled paper, small pet bedding for pet specialty retailers. Green Dreamzzz is made from the trimmings in the manufacturing of new telephone books.

New calorie regulations approved by Association of American Feed Control Officials
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) held its "mid-year" meeting January 22-24 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. By far the biggest news was the vote in the General Session to approve the proposed changes to AAFCO Model Regulation PF9 that would require calorie content statements on ALL (not just "lite" and "reduced calorie") dog and cat food labels.

Latin America petfood market to grow at world's highest rate
Latin America's petfood industry, the third largest petfood market in the world with the highest growth rate, has a current market volume of 4 million metric tons, which is expected to increase to 6-7 million tons by 2017, according to a presentation at the International Rendering Symposium. Latin America holds a 17 percent share of the global petfood market, according to Dr. Gianni Carniglia, National Renderers Association, who spoke at the symposium, recently held during the 2013 International Production & Processing Expo.

Pets in the Classroom Grant Program receives more than US$8,000
To promote pet responsibility at an early age, the Pet Care Trust, World Pet Association and other pet-related businesses raised more than US$8,000 for the Pets in the Classroom Grant Program during America’s Family Pet Expo, held November 3-4 in Puyallup, Washington, USA. The money raised will go to helping about 50 teachers enhance their classrooms and curriculum through the aid of classroom pets, impacting nearly 2,500 students.
