Kasel Associated Industries is recalling Boots & Barkley Roasted American Pig Ears and Boots & Barkley American Variety Pack Dog Treats, after a routine sampling by the Colorado, USA, Department of Agricultre tested positive for Salmonella. The recalled Roasted American Pig Ears product comes in a clear plastic bag containing 12 pig ears, marked with UPC bar code 647263899158.

Design firm Bobbye Chochran + Associates won two American Graphic Design awards from Graphic Design USA magazine for packaging designed for pet treat company Lincoln Bark. Awards were given for Lincoln Bark's Treat Smart dog treats and Doggie Sprinkles.

Petfood manufacturer Del Monte donates cat food during 2012 US election
The face of Del Monte Food's 9Lives cat food brand, Morris the Cat, is running in the 2012 US presidential election, campaigning for forever homes for all cats and to provide petfood to hungry cats. In support of Morris the Cat and his potential running mate, Mayor Stubbs, Del Monte has pledged to give back to cats in need during their campaign, through November 6.

Petfood costs rise in the US, analyst says
The cost of petfood in the US continues to rise at a faster rate than many other consumer expenditures, according to one analyst. From 2005-2011, the inflation rate, or consumer price index, rose 2.4 percent annually, while the price of many consumer goods rose at an even faster rate.

The American Feed Industry Association will host the Import/Export Seminar, December 4-5, in Arlington, Virginia, USA, to educate and discuss with industry members the regulatory trade requirements for petfood, feed and ingredient industries. PetHub to expand services into overseas markets
USA-based PetHub Inc. will expand into the markets of Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Germany, South Africa and the Netherlands, Tom Arnold, founder, announced at the World Pet Association’s SuperZoo trade show for pet product retailers. In August, the company had a successful “soft launch” outside of the US and Canada into other English-speaking countries.

Indian pet care market to reach US$144.8 million by 2015
According to a report from Euromonitor International, the pet care market in India is estimated to reach Rs800 crore (US$144.8 million) by 2015 from Rs368 crore (US$66.6 million) in 2011, as pet ownership rises and fuels greater demand for pet care products. Industry players estimate that average spending on pets is crossing more than Rs10,000 (US$180.74) per month, which includes daily hygiene care, petfood, vaccination and other services.

American Animal Hospital Association discourages raw diets
The American Animal Hospital Association has joined the American Veterinary Medical Association in discouraging the feeding of raw petfood diets to dogs and cats. According to a statement on its website, the American Animal Hospital Association “does not advocate or endorse feeding pets any raw or dehydrated nonsterilized foods, including treats that are of animal origin.”

BHJ USA Inc. acquired Protein Inc., a supplier of fresh/chilled meat blends to the wet and dry petfood markets. Protein Inc. will continue its current operations as a subsidiary of BHJ USA Inc., maintaining its current name and independent profile.
