Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dog food recalled for high aflatoxin levels

Petfood manufacturer Procter & Gamble is voluntarily recalling select bags of Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food, due to aflatoxin levels detected higher than the accepted limit. The recall is for 7-, 8-, and 17.5-pound bags of the Iams dog food, marked with expiration dates of February 5, 2013, and February 6, 2013.

Does consumers' willingness to pay for improved food safety apply to petfood?

A recent study by Kevin Haninger and James Hammitt of the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis shows US consumers would be willing to spend US$4,500-6,000 to prevent each case of short-term illness caused by contaminated food. Reported in the October edition of FSMeDigest from Food Safety Magazine, the study started with the seemingly simple goal of examining the "monetary value that consumers place on a safer food supply," the authors wrote.

Nestle Purina recalls adult cat food for Salmonella contamination

Nestle Purina is voluntarily recalling bags of its Purina One Vibrant Maturity 7+ dry cat food due to concerns the petfood could be tainted with Salmonella, according to the company. Purina is recalling select 3.5- and 7-pound bags of the petfood, marked with a "Best by" date of May 2012. Recalled 3.5-pound cat food bags have production codes of 03341084 and 03351084, with UPC codes of 17800 01885.

Nestle issues dry cat food recall in US

Nestle Purina PetCare Co. recalled select bags of its Cat Chow and Friskies brands of dry cat food over concerns of Salmonella contamination. The food was shipped to distributors in Colorado, Idaho and Oregon, USA, and in turn, may have been distributed to other western states, according to the company.

Bravo! recalls pig ear chew pet treats for Salmonella contamination

Bravo! issued a voluntary recall for select boxes of Bravo! pig ears chews because of the potential for Salmonella contamination. The recalled Bravo! pig ears were distributed to retailers on the East and West Coasts of the US between January 1 and February 28.

California, USA, petfood company recalls raw cat food for Salmonella

A California, USA, petfood company issued a voluntary recall of its raw cat food because the food may be contaminated with Salmonella. Primal Pet Foods of San Mateo, California, USA recalled its Feline Chicken & Salmon Formula, 4-pound chicken and salmon nuggets (UPC# 8 95135 00025 0) with a "best by" date code of 043112-17.

Two petfood companies issue pig ear dog treat recall

Two additional petfood companies issued recalls for pig ear dog treats after Illinois, USA-based supplier, Keys Manufacturing, found that a batch of the pet chews tested positive for Salmonella. Boss Pet Products recalled its Diggers Natural Treat Pig Ear pet treats, which were distributed from November 2010 through April 2011, in the following states: Montana, California, Washington, Oklahoma, Tennessee, New York, Kansas, Ohio, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Oregon, Utah, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana and Minnesota, USA.

The US Food and Drug Administration launched a website to make it easier for consumers to find information on recalled products, including petfoods, by compiling notices in a searchable tab. FDA's Web page displays information on all recalls since 2009 by date, product brand name, product description, reason for the recall and the organization initiating the recall.

Jones Natural Chews Co. of Rockford, Illinois, USA recalled 2,705 boxes of its pig ear dog chews due to possible Salmonella contamination. The recalled pig ear chews were shipped to distributors and retailers in the following states: Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
