How to sample and test for aflatoxin in petfood ingredients
Aflatoxin, a potentially dangerous mycotoxin, has been an increasing concern for manufacturers and suppliers of petfood ingredients such as corn, as well as petfood manufacturers who use those ingredients in their product formulations. The severe drought in the US Midwest this past summer has only heightened that concern and the risk of aflatoxin contamination.

FOSS donates analyzers to Kansas State Department of Grain Science
FOSS has donated two near infrared analyzers to Kansas State University's Department of Grain Science and Industry for use in classroom teaching and research. One of the machines, the Profoss in-line flour analyzer, is installed in the Hal Ross Flour Mill on the University's Grain Science Innovation Campus.

Chicken jerky treats linked to deaths of 360 dogs, 1 cat
Over the past 18 months, federal health officials have said claims of illnesses linked to chicken jerky treats imported from China have now reached more than 2,200, including reports that at least 360 dogs and one cat have reportedly died after eating the treats. The Food and Drug Administration released a few hundred complaints that were received by its District Consumer Complaint Coordinators between January 1, 2007, and July 2, 2012.

When I was in Shanghai, China, a few weeks ago for Petfood Forum China and Pet Fair Asia, I was somewhat surprised by the number of people who asked about the US presidential election on November 6. I suppose I underestimated how integrated China is becoming into the global economy and political scene, and how much news from outside the country reaches its citizens despite government censorship and blocking of certain media.

Council of Agriculture promotes petfood bill in Taiwan
The Council of Agriculture recently promoted its petfood bill at the Legislative Yuan public hearing, stressing that Taiwan lacks comprehensive laws to regulate the local petfood industry. First introduced in March and currently under review, the proposed “Pet Food Safety Management Act” would require commercial petfood manufacturers to provide ingredients labeling and comply with residue levels for harmful substances.

Wenger Manufacturing to host petfood safety seminar
Corporate Project Services, a division of Wenger Manufacturing, will host a food safety seminar focusing on petfood processing, February 26 through March 1. A group of industry professionals will share food safety information as it applies directly to each step of the petfood production process, from plant design to sourcing raw materials, production, sanitation and packaging.

DuPont offers tool to measure impact of changing food prices
DuPont has enhanced its Global Food Security Index, which captures the impact of changes in global food prices at a national level where price fluctuations are felt most directly. Developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit, the Price Adjustment Factor tool measures the impact of changing food prices and income growth over time, in an effort to better understand the root causes of hunger.

Recall: Yoghund Banana & Peanut Butter frozen yogurt dog treats
BD Brands LLC is recalling Yoghund frozen yogurt dog treats in the Organic Banana & Peanut Butter variety because the product contains organic peanut butter linked to recent recalls by Sunland Inc. for possible Salmonella contamination. The recall involves Yoghund dog treats in Organic Banana & Peanut Butter flavor case products, marked with lot code 268 12 and earlier, cup and four-packs marked with "Best By" dates of 9.24.14 or earlier.
