The latest petfood recalls: Is our industry at another crossroads?
Recalls in our industry are nothing new, of course, and with new food safety regulations bringing new reporting requirements, petfood recalls seem to have increased within the past two years -- even though industry professionals know that's not the case. Rather, manufacturers have become more proactive and complied with the new regulations by reporting any incidence of Salmonella or another pathogen found in a facility, even if no products were contaminated (which is usually the case).

Neogen launches ANSR detection system for petfood safety
Neogen Corp. launched the Amplified Nucleic Single Temperature Reaction isothermal pathogen detection system for petfood safety, along with its first assay for Salmonella at a conference in Dallas, Texas, USA. The Amplified Nucleic Single Temperature Reaction system has a 10-minute assay and a small-format reader, Neogen says, as well as incorporates advances in DNA detection technology. The new system comes complete with a reader / incubator, laptop with software, lysis system and pipettes.

Diamond adds more brands in dry dog food recall
Diamond Pet Foods has further expanded its dry dog food recall to include several more brands of dry dog food produced at the company's Gaston, South Carolina, USA, facility, after samples of dog food from the same plant tested positive for Salmonella infantis. The recall was expanded as a precautionary measure, the company says, to include the following brands: • Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul

Dog food recall expanded: Canidae, Wellness, Natural Balance
Following the dry dog food recalls by Diamond Pet Foods over concerns of Salmonella contamination at the company's Gaston, South Carolina, USA, petfood manufacturing plant, Canidae, Wellness and Natural Balance have also issued voluntary recalls for certain dry petfood formulas manufactured at the same South Carolina plant. Canidae Pet Foods is recalling select dry dog food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011, and January 31, 2012, at the Gaston plant.

Chicken jerky pet treats: the new melamine?
Are chicken jerky pet treats falsely maligned or the new melamine? To be frank, I do not know the answer. I am not privy to any of the details regarding reported incidences of harm to dogs from consumption of chicken jerky manufactured in China or to any test results or other investigative findings; hence I do not have a sufficient basis to make a determination.

CDC confirms 14 human Salmonella cases linked to dry dog food
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 14 people in the US have been sickened with Salmonella infantis infections, including at least five that are hospitalized, in a nine-state outbreak linked to dry dog food. The CDC reported that multiple brands of Diamond Pet Foods dry dog food, including several that have been recently recalled, are linked to human illnesses, which could be transmitted either through contact with the contaminated petfood or through handling an animal that has eaten the contaminated dog food.

Biomin releases report on mycotoxins in animal feed
Biomin released the results of its Biomin Mycotoxin Survey Program 2011, a comprehensive report on studies conducted on the distribution of mycotoxins according to region of origin and common type. More than 4,300 samples were collected from various countries over a 12-month period from January-December 2011, and 13,854 analyses of mycotoxins were performed to investigate the occurrence of aflatoxins, zearalenone, deoxynivalenol, fumonisins and/or ochratoxin A in different regions of the world and feed materials.

Kaytee Pet Products recalls Forti-Diet Pro Health small animal food
Kaytee Pet Products is recalling select packages of its Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Mouse, Rat and Hamster food due to possible Salmonella contamination. According to Kaytee, the product is being recalled because a sample from a 5-pound bag of the small animal food tested positive for Salmonella in a random test conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration, but no human or pet illnesses have been reported.

Diamond Pet Foods is expanding a voluntary recall to include Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food because a sampling of the product was contaminated with Salmonella. The expanded recall includes Diamond dry dog food Puppy Formula in the following bag sizes, marked with the following production codes and "Best-by" dates, respectively:
