Raw petfood makes the news
The feeding of raw petfood has been a controversy for decades. Both sides of the discussion have their extremist factions, with some believing it is the ultimately healthful means of feeding dogs and cats and others convinced it constitutes a wholly unwarranted risk to the health of both pets and the people feeding them.

Public tries to understand how to comply with FSMA animal food rule
A recent Food Safety News article captures reaction to the three public meetings held by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in late November and early December in College Park, Maryland, USA; Chicago, Illinois, USA; and Sacramento, California, USA, to discuss the animal food preventive controls rule under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The first meeting in College Park was attended mostly by organizations already familiar with FSMA, incuding the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), the International Warehouse Logistics Association and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

Looking into the 2014 petfood crystal ball
I don't really have a crystal ball (and I probably wouldn't trust it if I had one). Nor can I claim to predict, with full confidence, what will happen in the global petfood industry next year. But I can make a fairly informed speculation about the issues and events that may affect petfood in 2014. In no particular order of conviction or chronology:

Petfood industry can help shape FSMA preventive control rule
While the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) overall and, specifically, its recently proposed preventive control rule for animal feed represent a paradigm shift in how petfood will be regulated, the petfood industry has a rare -- if rushed -- opportunity to have a say in how the final rule will read. Yes, believe it or not, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wants your input.

Food Safety Modernization Act update
In October, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed new regulations to implement aspects of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) for animal feeds (including petfoods), similar to those proposed for foods for human consumption earlier this year. The law, enacted in 2011, addresses sweeping changes to regulation of food for both man and other animals, including the establishment of preventive controls, improved inspection and response capabilities, improved oversight of imports, and enhanced partnerships with domestic and international regulatory bodies.

Three tips for petfood manufacturers to prevent contamination
According to the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, more than 48 million Americans are stricken with food borne illness every year. The US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) attempts to help control this; but, companies may be rushing to meet the deadlines, says Polymer Solutions International, and gaps leave companies still not fully prepared to respond to and prevent the risk of contamination.
