FDA extends comment periods on two proposed FSMA rules
FDA issued Federal Register notices to extend the comment periods on the proposed rules for Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food, and Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption for 60 additional days until November 15. This is the second and final extension of the comment period for these two rules, part of the Food Safety Modernization Act.

Packaged Facts projects over US$21 billion in petfood spending in 2013
Consumer spending in the US pet market will reach US$62 billion in 2013, up 4.7 percent from 2012, according to US Pet Market Outlook 2013-2014. This study, recently released by Packaged Facts, shows that petfood and veterinary services account for the majority of the market, with more than US$21 billion each in sales forecast for 2013.

Since the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law in January 2011, I have seen reactions in our industry ranging from approval to grudging acceptance to complaints to anxiety. I have even heard anecdotes about a few, mainly smaller petfood or treat manufacturers who say they do not have the time or resources to comply with the law and its regulations, so they plan to just ignore it.

East Coast wholesale pet products distributor Pet Food Experts has reportedly purchased Zeus & Co., allowing the family owned company to expand into the Midwest petfood market. To appeal to the concerns of many petfood purchasers in the US, the claim "Made in USA" or similar verbiage, often accompanied by a depiction of the American flag, is not uncommon on petfood labels these days. Neither the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) nor the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has any regulations or expressed policies regarding use of the claim.

Recall: Dogswell, Catswell brand jerky treats with chicken, duck
Arthur Dogswell LLC has issued recall for select Dogswell and Catswell brand jerky treats made with chicken or duck, after testing by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets found trace amounts of an antibiotic during a routine product sampling. Treat products affected by the recall have a "Best Before" date marked on or before January 28, 2015.
