Robert Abady Dog and Cat Food Corporation of New York, USA, is voluntarily recalling two “limited specialty products” of frozen dog food due to Salmonella contamination. The petfood recall applies to 3-pound sizes of the following products: Abady Frozen High Stress/High Performance Dog Food.

FDA, Center for Food Safety fail to submit FSMA regulation schedule
The US Food and Drug Administration and the Center for Food Safety were unable to reached an agreement on a proposed schedule for Food Safety Modernization Act deadlines in compliance with a court's order to do so by May 20. FDA was ordered to set the schedule after being sued by the Center for Food Safety for missing several statutory deadlines in implementing FSMA.

Hartz Mountain Corp. issues recall for Wardley Betta fish food
Hartz Mountain Corporation has issued a voluntary recall of one lot of Wardley Betta fish food because products in that lot have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall was initiated after Salmonella was detected in a lot of the fish food during routine microbial product testing.

Why consumers are worrying more about petfood safety
US consumers are increasingly concerned about food safety -- and, by extension, petfood safety, since so many pet owners treats their pets like family members. As many as 17% of consumers have stopped buying a specific human food or brand because of a certain safety concern, according to IFIC (as reported in Food Technology magazine by A. Elizabeth Sloan, contributing editor).

Natura Pet Products is voluntarily recalling lots of its dry petfood brands because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall applies to all lot codes, UPC's and package sizes with expiration dates prior to June 10, 2014, of the following petfood products.

FDA to investigate Salmonella in petfood
As the moderator for the sessions on petfood safety at the 2013 Petfood Forum, I can say without fear of contradiction that Salmonella control was a very hot topic. Multiple speakers addressed the subject, and the information conveyed to the manufacturers in the audience was indeed timely.
