Euromonitor pet care expert discusses global pet specialty channel
In a videocast, Emily Woon, head of pet care research at Euromonitor International, discusses the pet specialist channel in pet care, with an analysis of the three largest pet specialty retailers: PetSmart, Petco and Germany-based Fressnapf. The pet specialty channel accounted for more than 50% of all pet care sales in 2010 and outpaced grocery stores in pet care sales, according to Woon.

AVMA publishes report on Salmonella in petfood
A report in the June 1 Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association outlines recommendations for pet owners on how to avoid pets being sickened with Salmonella from petfood. The report, written by Kate S. KuKanich, DVM, Ph.D., details the circumstances under which Salmonella organisms are most often ingested and includes a history of Salmonella outbreaks associated with petfood and treats.

Hill's Pet, CVMA release pet health, wellness study
Hill's Pet Nutrition and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association released a research study on pet health and wellness in Canada, which found that the choices pet owners make regarding petfood and exercise may affect the length and quality of their pet's life. The study, Canada's Pet Wellness Report, surveyed 1,000 Canadian dog and/or cat owners, and 100 veterinarians, on topics including exercise, nutrition, veterinary care, lifestage-related needs and overall health status.

Royal Canin says its petfood is specifically formulated to meet the needs of dogs, with special kibble sizes and low ingestible proteins. Low ingestible proteins are highly digestible proteins that the company says it uses in its petfoods to reduce the amount of undigested remains that reach the dog's colon.

Minnesota, USA, man faces charges for vegan petfood production
A Little Canada, Minnesota, USA, man faces 58 counts ranging from animal cruelty to practicing without a license after producing his own vegan petfood, according to a report by Minnesota's Fox news. Prosecutors served Eric Weisman with a warrant for the criminal charges on June 15.

German petfood, pet products market grew in 2010, IVH reports
The German pet market grew slightly in 2010, with total sales of petfood and pet care products rising 0.8% to nearly 3.71 billion euro (US$5.3 billion), according to the Industrial Association of Pet Care Producers, IVH. The prepared petfood segment also increased 0.8% in 2010, to nearly 2.78 billion euro (US$3.97 billion).
