SuperZoo 2011 draws record number of exhibitors, attendees
SuperZoo, hosted by the World Pet Association, drew 795 exhibiting companies to the September 2011 pet industry trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, a 15% increase over the previous year's show. Attendance increased by 19% over the previous year, with 12,197 registered attendees.

Purina Incredible Dog Challenge to be streamed on BarkNetwork.com
The Purina Incredible Dog Challenge National Finals will take place in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, on September 30 and October 1, and will also be streamed live on BarkNetwork.com on October 1. At the National Finals, top canine athletes from around the United States will be put to the test in a range of Olympic-style events including dog diving, freestyle flying disc, head-to-head weave poles, Jack Russell hurdle racing and agility.

Crananidin aids in dog health urinary tract maintenance, Nutramax study finds
Nutramax Laboratories Inc. announced results of research that the company says supports the use of its Crananidin chewable tablet product in the maintenance of urinary tract health in dogs. The study, performed at Rutgers University, Marucci Center for Blueberry Cranberry Research, showed that Crananidin inhibited adhesion of P-fimbriated E. coli in canine urine, according to the company.

Colorado, USA natural petfood maker raises US$3.5 million
Only Natural Pet Store LLC, a Boulder, Colorado, USA natural petfood maker and distributor, raised US$3.5 million, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing made on September 16, the Boulder County Business Report said. Only Natural Pet Store CEO Martin Grosjean declined to comment at that time, saying the company will make a detailed announcement in the next few weeks.

Survey finds American dog care spending unaffected by economy
In honor of National Dog Week from September 19-25, CouponCabin.com conducted an online survey that found nearly seven in 10 (68%) of US adult dog owners said that economic challenges do not affect their dog care spending. CouponCabin.com’s survey found that more than one in five (21%) dog owners spend an average of US$100 or more per month on their dogs, for a total of more than US$1,200 per year.

USDA publishes Kenya petfood market report
The US Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service published a Global Agricultural Information Network report that highlights the growing Kenyan petfood market. The report says that Kenya's petfood market grew 27% over the period from 2006-2010, attributed to an increase in pet ownership and demand for quality petfood. Kenya's petfood imports total about US$960,000, triple the amount in 2006, according to the report.

Pets contribute significantly to economy, society, FEDIAF says
The European Pet Food Industry Federation, FEDIAF, reported updated statistics that show pet animals make a significant contribution to the economy and to society. Throughout Europe, approximately 550,000 direct and indirect jobs, such as veterinarians, breeders or connected supply industries, are created as a result of pet ownership.

Pet care in emerging markets is booming as pet ownership rises among the middle class, an article in the Economist says. Specifically, Latin America’s spending on petfood and pet products increased 44% in the last five years to US$11 billion, according to Euromonitor.

An Associated Press analysis found that the government has spent more than US$3.4 billion on food counter-terrorism over the past decade, but key programs have been slowed in the government. A Senate subcommittee recently held a hearing to examine a congressional watchdog's new report that reveals federal setbacks in protecting cattle and crops since September 11, 2001.

Institute of Food Technologists leads pilot food traceability programs
The Institute of Food Technologists will lead two pilot programs for the US Food and Drug Administration designed to test and study various food product tracing systems. The purpose of the pilots is to identify methods to rapidly and effectively trace food products throughout the supply chain, so that products can be quickly identified and removed from the marketplace during a food-related outbreak to minimize the number of consumers affected.
