Spectrum Labs will spend the months of May and June raising money for Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support, a collaboration of three Japan-based no-kill animal rescue groups that are helping animals affected by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. During May and June, Spectrum Labs will donate US$1 for each new follower on its Twitter page, for each new “like” on its Facebook page, for each new veterinary clinic that chooses to receive its newsletter electronically instead of on paper, and to any attendee of the CVC East conference who swipes a card at Spectrum Labs' booth 211.

Two petfood companies issue pig ear dog treat recall

Two additional petfood companies issued recalls for pig ear dog treats after Illinois, USA-based supplier, Keys Manufacturing, found that a batch of the pet chews tested positive for Salmonella. Boss Pet Products recalled its Diggers Natural Treat Pig Ear pet treats, which were distributed from November 2010 through April 2011, in the following states: Montana, California, Washington, Oklahoma, Tennessee, New York, Kansas, Ohio, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Oregon, Utah, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana and Minnesota, USA.

Canadian petfood company launches dry dog food line with all fresh ingredients

CARNA4 Inc., a Canada-based petfood start-up, says it has created the first dry dog food to use real food ingredients that are all grown in the US and Canada, without vitamin and mineral pre-mixes or other additives. The company says its dog food is made with fresh, table-grade chicken, wild salmon, eggs, whole produce and sprouted seeds, all baked to preserve authentic flavors and nutrients.

German petfood market grows slowly in 2010

Germany's market for petfood grew slightly in 2010 compared to 2009, rising 0.8% to € 2.777 billion (US$3.93 billion). The strongest growth in 2010 was in the market for cat food, which increased 2.9% to € 1.435 billion (US$2.03 billion).
