UK petfood company secures funding for expansion
UK-based petfood company MPM Products recently secured funding of £3m (US$4.9 million) to help the company expand its business. The company reported that its revenues have grown from £4m (US$6.5 million) to £10m (US$16.3 million) in under two years and MPM said it aims to increase the figure up to £50m (US$81.4 million) by 2014.

Holistic petfood company hosts bike raffle for pet cancer research
Canidae Pet Foods will host a charity raffle to win a pair of Felt Beach Cruiser bikes, with all proceeds benefitting the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation to help in the fight against pet cancer. The raffle will take place during the 2011 Amgen Tour of California, offering the chance to purchase raffle tickets near the finish line at each stage of the race.

Nature’s Logic announced that its ongoing retailer loyalty program has so far led to over 50% growth, compared to the first quarter of 2010, for qualifying retailers. The program includes rebates and employee rewards for retailers, as well as coupons and a frequent purchase plan for pet owners.

Britain's 26 million pet owners spend roughly £15 billion (US$24.7 billion) per year on their pets, an average of £11.04 (US$18.19) per pet per week, according to a recent survey. But the economic downturn has owners trying to find ways to cut costs.

FDA issues regulations for importing petfood ingredients
In May, the Food and Drug Administration announced two new regulations to help ensure the safety and security of foods and petfoods in the US. The rules are the first to be issued by FDA under the authorities granted by the Food Safety Modernization Act, signed into law by President Obama in January. Both rules will take effect July 3, 2011.

Palm kernel meal in UK petfood contributing to deforestation
British pets and other animals consume 10% of all palm kernel meal—a byproduct of palm oil—produced in the world, which may be contributing to the destruction of the rainforests where the oil is found. The UK imported a total of 643,400 metric tons of palm oil and 663,300 metric tons of palm kernel meal in 2009, according to "Mapping and understanding the UK palm oil supply chain," a report completed for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
