FEDIAF EuropeanPetFood has announced the release of its updated 2024 Nutritional Guidelines for Pet Food for Cats and Dogs. These guidelines, launched on September 12, 2024, provide detailed recommendations for nutrient levels in pet food, tailored to pets' life stages, health and activity levels. They are a vital resource for manufacturers and are trusted across Europe by EU authorities, professionals, and pet owners.
The guidelines were peer-reviewed by FEDIAF’s Nutrition Working Group and the independent Scientific Advisory Board, comprised of experts from academia and private consulting. This 2024 edition includes significant updates, such as recommendations on balancing high fat and protein in dog food, and revisions regarding inorganic phosphorus in cat food, based on the latest scientific research.
Alice Tempel Costa, FEDIAF deputy secretary-general, emphasized the guidelines' role in supporting the production of safe, nutritious pet food, incorporating National Research Council (NRC) data. Dr. Lisa Conboy-Schmidt, chair of FEDIAF's Nutrition Working Group, noted that the rigorous review of recent scientific literature ensures that these guidelines remain the leading standard in pet nutrition.
The guidelines were launched during the ESVCN Congress in Belfast on September 11 with key contributors present at the event.
