China responds to chicken jerky dog treat complaints
The Chinese government has responded to complaints about chicken jerky treats imported from that country that have been linked to dog illnesses in the US and have been the subject of recent investigations by the US Food and Drug Administration. Congressman Jerry McNerney wrote a letter to the Chinese government about the chicken jerky treats, asking the government to "consider halting production of these chicken jerky treats until the FDA can determine whether or not the products contain tainted material."

Champion Petfoods resumes petfood production at Canada facility
Champion Petfoods says it has resumed production of two petfood brands after a fire destroyed a dryer at the petfood company's plant in Morinville, Alberta, Canada. The company will resume production of its Orijen and Acana petfood brands and products will be delivered to retailers during December.

Mars Petcare invests in petfood facility in South Carolina, USA
Petfood maker Mars Petcare US is investing US$12.5 million over the next three years in its production facility in Orangeburg, South Carolina, USA, which producers the company's Pedigree and Whiskas petfood brands. The petfood company will purchase 3.75 acres of land adjacent to its current facility to expand the drop lot where trailers are unloaded and will install more equipment, according to Eudreon Curry, site manager.

Shipping costs to increase if longshoremen strike on East Coast US
The International Longshoremen's Association will likely go on strike at ports on the East Coast of the US beginning December 29, according to Global Development & Management LLC, a company that helps petfood manufacturers establish export markets. The company says negotiations through a dederal mediator are ongoing; however, the association is expected to call for a strike lasting a week to 10 days based on results from the previous port strike on the West Coast of the US.
