Nestlé Purina PetCare Company has filed a lawsuit in federal court in St. Louis, Missouri, against The Blue Buffalo Company Ltd., for false advertising, disparagement and unjust enrichment—including violations of the Federal Lanham Act (15 U.S.C. § 1125(a)).

Kemin Industries plans to expand its production facility in Verona, Mo. The five-year expansion plan includes a more than US$14 million capital investment and is expected to create 24 jobs, according to reports.

Ingredient company Symrise to buy Diana for US$1.8 billion
German scents and flavors group Symrise will buy France's Diana Group for an agreed EUR1.3 billion (US$1.8 billion) including debt to narrow the gap on top rival Givaudan and expand in natural ingredients and petfood, according to the company. The purchase from private equity group Ardian will make Symrise the world's third-biggest scents and flavors company, up from number four, and help it toward a goal of boosting annual sales by around EUR1 billion by 2020.

Petfood, feed industries seek extended comment period on CGMPs proposed rule
The Pet Food Institute (PFI), the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), the National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) and the National Renderers Association (NRA) on March 4 submitted an official request to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to extend the comment period for its proposed rule on Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals to give petfood, animal feed and feed ingredient companies more time to review and develop comments on this major proposed regulation.

Penford Corporation to acquire Gum Technology Corp.
Penford Corporation, which deals in ingredient systems for food and industrial applications, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Gum Technology, a privately held gum and hydrocolloids distribution, blending and services company. Gum Technology, based in Tucson, Ariz., serves primarily the food and beverage industries.

AAFCO ponders maximum calcium levels in dog food
How much calcium is too much in dog foods? In 2007, the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) convened a panel of experts from academia and industry to, in part, make recommendations for revision of the AAFCO Dog and Cat Food Nutrient Profiles. These profiles, which were last revised in 1995, serve as one means by which the nutritional adequacy of dog and cat foods can be substantiated in the US.

The global population, currently at about 7.15 billion people, is forecast to grow to 9.6 billion people by 2050, leading to a 69% higher need for food calories, according to the World Resources Institute. Likewise, the world’s pet population is expected to continue to increase, with the fastest growth in places that are also experiencing the most growth in human population or demand for food, such as China and India.
