US petfood ingredient regulatory process faces uncertain future
One of most common questions I get from media and people outside our industry is about how petfoods and ingredients are regulated, particularly in the US. This has been a recurring question ever since the 2007 melamine-related recalls and continuing through more recent Salmonella-related recalls, passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and, most recently, the release of proposed preventive control rules for feed and petfood under FSMA.

AFIA seeks comment from member companies on ingredient approvals
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) ingredient approval process, used by 49 states, has an unclear future with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Despite a 35-year cooperative relationship, the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has learned that FDA feels specifically "the AAFCO process ultimately falls short" and "the majority of ingredients that are included in the AAFCO 'official publication' are neither approved food additives nor are they generally recognized as safe (GRAS)."

Update: ingredient sourcing and traceability
A provision of the federal Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510) recently signed in to law requires that all players in the US petfood supply chain be able to quickly trace from whom they received an ingredient and to whom they sent it. Petfood manufacturers will have to maintain that information in digital form which means consumers could tap into this information through their computers or smartphones.

Riding the grain-free petfood wave
Pet owners spent US$1.7 billion on grain-free petfood products at US pet specialty stores from September 2012 to September 2013, according to GfK. Raw petfood makes the news
The feeding of raw petfood has been a controversy for decades. Both sides of the discussion have their extremist factions, with some believing it is the ultimately healthful means of feeding dogs and cats and others convinced it constitutes a wholly unwarranted risk to the health of both pets and the people feeding them.
