Bioiberica has announced publication of research confirming the presence of bioactive peptides in Palbio, a hydrolyzed porcine intestinal mucosa protein for animal nutrition. The research, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, validates that the ingredient contains peptides with antimicrobial, antioxidant, cytokine/growth factor-like and immunomodulatory activities.
For over 25 years, Bioiberica said its researchers have studied the Palbio range for animal nutrition. The ingredient is developed with porcine protein obtained through enzymatic hydrolysis as a co-product of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Early research demonstrated Palbio as a palatable and bioavailable source of amino acids that support metabolism, promote feed intake and stimulate growth in swine, poultry and pets.
Further studies found Palbio influences intestinal cell morphology, selectively promoting their growth over other tissues like lung, liver and kidney. The ingredient was also found to stimulate metabolic regulators in gut cells involved in key physiological functions.
The new study supports the hypothesis that Palbio is rich in free amino acids and contains bioactive peptides with specific biological activities. The company said animals supplemented with Palbio showed evidence of contribution to growth, gut integrity and immune modulation.
"This milestone is the culmination of decades of research and trials investigating the potential of Palbio, to show why it can be trusted to deliver results for our customers," said Xavier Garcia, business unit director animal and plant health at Bioiberica. "Palbio is not just a high-performance functional feed ingredient with a long-standing reputation for quality — it is now scientifically validated as a source of free amino acids and bioactive peptides that support animal health. Research like this exemplifies how we have approached innovation at Bioiberica for over 50 years; with scientific rigor, complete transparency, and an insatiable curiosity."
The Palbio range consists of Palbio HP and Palbio 50. Based in Spain, Bioiberica is a global life sciences company with production centers in Europe and the U.S. that exports to more than 80 countries.
