Dog owners continue to buy premium petfood in spite of the current economic climate, according to a survey conducted by online pet supplies store GJW Titmuss. The survey results indicate that 74% of dog owners purchase top-quality, premium petfood products.

Pet supply chain Petco is hosting, and Blue Buffalo pet products is sponsoring, the "Pounds for Pounds" weigh-in challenge through January 26. Evaluation of hematology profiles in lean, overweight, obese and diabetic cats
The purpose of this study was to compare results of hematologic testing in nondiabetic and diabetic cats to identify possible indicators of alterations in long-term glucose control. Researchers studied 117 client-owned cats: 76 nondiabetic cats (25 with normal body condition, 27 overweight and 24 obese) and 41 naïve (21) and treated (20) diabetic cats.

Thiamine concentrations in canned foods for cats
Researchers measured thiamine concentrations in commercial canned foods formulated for cats as an assessment of the variation among canned foods. Researchers also determined the effects of flavor (fish vs. nonfish) of the food, texture (paté vs. nonpaté) of the food, country of manufacture and size of the company on thiamine concentration.

The effects of hydroxyproline and oxalate on urinary oxalate excretion in cats
Researchers tested whether urinary oxalate excretion occurs in cats by feeding diets containing low oxalate with high (Hhyp-Lox), moderate (Mhyp-Lox) and low hyp (Lhyp-Lox) concentrations, and low hyp with high oxalate (Lhyp-Hox) to eight adult, female cats in a 48-day study. Cats were randomly allocated to one of four 12-day treatment periods and fed according to individual energy needs.

The feeding of raw petfood has been a controversy for decades. Both sides of the discussion have their extremist factions, with some believing it is the ultimately healthful means of feeding dogs and cats and others convinced it constitutes a wholly unwarranted risk to the health of both pets and the people feeding them.

Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), a supplier of petfood ingredients, has selected Chicago, Illinois, USA, as the location for its global headquarters and customer center.
