Latest human food trends parallel petfood trends (or vice versa)
Petfood product development follows human food trends by only "half a step," said David Sprinkle, research director and publisher with Packaged Facts, during a Petfood Forum 2013 presentation. Enzyme effects on extruded soybean meal diets for dogs
This study investigated the effects of exogenous enzymes supplementation on kibble diets for dogs formulated with soybean meal (SBM) as a substitute for poultry by-product meal (PM), highlighting nutrient digestibility, fermentation products formation, post-prandial urea response and selected fecal bacteria counts. Two kibble diets with similar compositions were used in two trials: a PM-based diet (28.9% of PM; soybean hulls as a fiber source) and an SBM-based diet (29.9% of SBM).

This study was triggered by the increased incidence of obesity and metabolic diseases in caged parrots, and evaluated the effects of fiber and food processing on Blue-and-gold macaws. Four food formulations (0%, 7%, 14% and 21% of sugarcane fiber) processed by pelleting or extrusion were studied, resulting in eight diets.
