Genetically modified food labeling to be voted on in Washington, USA
Mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods will be voted on in November by state legislators in Washington, USA, where a new initiative was recently introduced. If passed, Initiative 522, or "The People's Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act," would require that agricultural commodities and processed foods containing genetically engineered ingredients must be labeled accordingly.

Monge expands its petfood future by honoring its past
The year 2013 will be an eventful one for the Italian family-owned company Monge as the company celebrates the milestone of its 50th anniversary. The celebration will be doubly significant: while celebrating the past, and the company's 1963 founding, Monge is also looking to the future, with a ribbon cutting for the opening of its new advanced dry food facility which, in the words of CEO Domenico Monge, "will put us well on the way to becoming a true one-stop shop for the consumer and enable us to produce wet and dry food for virtually every market segment on the same production site."

FreeHand chooses rescue dog as face of new petfood packaging
FreeHand, a petfood company, recently awarded a Dallas, Texas, USA, rescue dog named Leslie as the winner of the "New Fuzzy Face of FreeHand" Facebook contest winner. As winner of the contest, which aimed to encourage rescue dog adoption, Leslie will also appear on the front of the petfood company's new 5-pound, super-premium dog food bags.

Petfood can recycling program donates to animal shelter in Pennsylvania, USA
The Alcoa Foundation and Pennsylvania Resources Council's Cans for Pets recycling campaign has recycled more than 6,500 aluminum petfood cans during its first 10 weeks and raised money to aid homeless animals at a local shelter. The Cans for Pets campaign was launched in November 2012 as a two-year effort to raise awareness and increase the total number of aluminum petfood cans recycled each year.

Petfood safety: Update on the Food Safety Modernization Act
As of January 4, 2013, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released for public comment a proposed rule on Preventive Controls for Human Food and a proposed rule on Standards for Produce Safety. These rules are two of the proposed rules that are key to the preventive food safety approach established by the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), according to Bob McDonald of Food Safety Validation.
