Innovation has become a key business process and is seen as essential for business growth and development. “The aim of the innovation/new product development process is to start with a collection of many ad-hoc ideas and finish with a selection of a few defined ideas to present to the market place,” explained John Adams of Adams Developments in his Petfood Forum 2009 presentation on new product development.
While trends like sustainability, 'eco-friendly' labeling and humanization will continue to drive growth in the US and Europe, there are still areas of the globe that remain virutally untapped.

Euromonitor International's latest research, published in June 2010, expects the global petfood industry to see steady retail value growth in 2010 despite continued global economic uncertainty. Major markets maintained more than respectable retail value gains as petfood reinforced itself as an essential item for consumers, according to research from Packaged Facts in their report U.S. Pet Food Market Perspective and Prospects, 2010-2011.
The global petfood market has been riding a strong wave of growth, in both developed and developing markets, which should sustain it through uncertain economic times, predict both Euromonitor and Packaged Facts.

Survey: consumers drive sustainability in petfood
“Top consumer groups turn to sustainability.” That was the headline for an Entrepreneur.com article by Bill Roth, president of NCCT, a San Francisco-based consulting firm specializing in sustainability marketing and business strategies. Roth, writing about last year’s Sustainable Brands Conference, was referring to US youth, women and CEOS. Representing an annual buying power of about US$10 trillion, these three consumer groups are “shifting their purchasing criteria toward sustainability,” Roth wrote.
Survey respondents see energy conservation as a leading source of return on sustainability investment.

Something to Chew On: Petfood stands strong at Interzoo
Everyone in the world who has anything to do with the pet industry converged on Nuremberg, Germany, the week of May 10—or at least that’s how it seemed. Actually, more than 38,000 pet trade visitors from 117 countries attended Interzoo 2010, according to its organizers, in addition to 1,052 companies from 53 countries exhibiting their products for cats, dogs, small mammals, birds, fish and reptiles or supplies for companies manufacturing those products.
Interzoo 2010 was full of creative stands from petfood manufacturers, including lighted floor displays of treats from Rolls Rocky of Italy.

Something To Chew On: Sustainability comes to petfood
A group called the Social Investment Forum issued a report earlier this year showing a more than 33% increase in the number of leading publicly traded US companies reporting on their sustainability initiatives. Specifically, 66 of the firms in the S&P 100 in 2008 issued a formal sustainability report with performance data, compared with 49 companies producing such a report in 2007.

Paws with a cause
According to a recent article in Advertising Age by Mike Swenson, throughout 2009 we saw the launch of many national cause-marketing programs despite shrinking marketing budgets. Successful cause campaigns partnering petfood companies with petfood banks, local shelters, service dogs and non-profit organizations continue to be the trend.
Cause branding is no longer about asking consumers to cut a check or ask for a donation. Look for companies to develop programs that engage pet parents as well as their pets.

Something to Chew On: Petfood's launch party
A trip to Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida, USA, in late March provided tangible proof that the pet industry has weathered the recession well and is set for a strong year. There were definitely more people-pet retail store buyers, exhibiting pet product manufacturers and others-than at least year's event, and a palpable buzz filled the aisles and air.
